Primal Pet Foods turns 20 this year! To celebrate two decades of building better bowls for happier, healthier pets, we're looking back on how we got started and some of the exciting things we’ve accomplished.
IT ALL STARTED WITH LUNA
In early 2000, our founder Matt Koss discovered that his dog, Luna, was displaying early signs of renal failure and sprung into action to help his four-legged friend. After endless vet visits and exhausting every option, Matt took the advice of a holistic veterinarian who recommended switching Luna’s diet to Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (or BARF, for short). After a few months of creating meals at home for Luna, Matt noticed an improvement in her health and happiness! This inspired him to share this idea with other pet owners, and Primal Pet Foods was born.
THE EXPANSION OF PRIMAL PET FOODS
Matt first sold his Chicken Formula raw pet foods in a local pet store in California’s Bay Area. In 2005, the business landed a national distribution deal that put Primal products in pet stores all around the United States! This also meant we had the opportunity to grow our product line to add lamb and beef varieties for dogs, plus chicken & salmon and beef & salmon varieties for cats.
THE CONVENIENCE OF IT ALL
As our product line expanded and more stores began carrying raw pet food, Matt and the team decided to add more convenient formats and packaging into the mix. With the development of the frozen nuggets packed in zip-seal bags, Primal was able to bring portion-controlled raw pet food to homes across the nation that could thaw in minutes!
In 2011, Primal introduced a Freeze-Dried format, which provided pet owners with a shelf-stable option for easy storage. Two years later, innovative minds struck again by developing the convenient, scoop-and-serve varieties of Primal Pronto!
