Veggie Tales: Why Primal Includes Fruits & Vegetables In Our Complete Formulas

When we think about what dogs and cats eat, we primarily think of meat. Dogs and cats get many of the nutrients they need from meat, and a meat-based diet is biologically appropriate for your pet. But you’ll notice that Primal Pet Foods also includes organic produce in our complete and balanced formulas.

Since an all-meat diet is not a complete and balanced diet for dogs and cats, we have to look at incorporating other ingredients to make our Formulas complete and balanced. Produce provides nutrients that your pet cannot get from human-grade muscle meat, organ meat, and bone alone. We choose to include these nutrients from whole food ingredients like organic fruits, organic vegetables, and unrefined supplements, rather than using synthetic vitamin and mineral packs. Our canine diets average 85% meat + 15% produce/supplements and our feline diets average 93% meat + 7% produce/supplements.

So what kind of organic produce do we include in our formulas, and why?

Leafy Greens

Kale, collard greens, and mustard greens are all great sources of Vitamins A and K, and provide high levels of antioxidants to offset any free radicals in your pet’s system. Additionally, greens provide healthy fiber, helping to cleanse your dog or cat’s digestive system.

Broccoli, Carrots, & Squash

Broccoli, carrots, and squash are rich in Vitamins A and C. Broccoli and carrots provide potassium and fiber, promoting a healthy heart and colon. Broccoli also contributes calcium for healthy bones, while carrots and squash supply beta-carotene and other carotenoids, promoting strong eyesight.

Celery & Green Beans

Both veggies are a source of manganese, a mineral necessary for body function, and Vitamin K, which helps your pet’s circulation run smoothly. Celery also has Vitamin C and beta-carotene, and acts as a natural anti-inflammatory. Green Beans contribute carotenoids that promote healthy eyesight.

Blueberries & Cranberries

Blueberries and cranberries offer a wide array of phytonutrients and are known for their anti-inflammatory properties. Both are rich in Manganese essential for growth, metabolism, and the body’s antioxidant system. Additionally, blueberries and cranberries promote urinary tract health.

When you feed your pet Primal, rest assured that they are getting all of the nutrients they need to stay healthy. All these powerful food-based vitamins and minerals are packed in using a small amount of organic produce. That’s the power of whole food ingredients.
