Update – March 15, 2023
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted a routine inspection of our Fairfield, California, facility following our voluntary recall of Raw Frozen Beef Patties last summer. Throughout last year’s inspection, our team partnered with FDA officials to review our existing food safety plan and identify opportunities to strengthen it.
The FDA was satisfied with our voluntary recall process and terminated the recall in late January 2023. As a follow up to the routine inspection, we also responded to a Warning Letter that the FDA issued to request additional information about specific aspects of our food safety plan. For example, we committed to start using HPP on all frozen red meat formulas as an added safety measure in addition to sourcing high-quality red meats, testing raw materials and testing and holding the finished product prior to distribution. We needed to show how we are consistently implementing this new procedure (like we’ve been doing effectively on frozen poultry formulas since 2011).
We are confident we are taking the right steps to ensure we are continuing to make raw food even safer for our consumers and their pets. If you have any questions about the steps we are taking, we encourage you to contact us by phone at (800) 742-1312 Monday–Friday, 6:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. PST, or by submitting an online request.
Initial Announcement – July 6, 2022
On behalf of our Primal team, I wanted to make you aware of a voluntary recall we are conducting on a single lot (#W10068709) of Raw Frozen Primal Patties for Dogs Beef Formula (6-pound), with best by date of 05/22/23, due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
We distributed sixty-six cases (396 units) of this product to Maryland, Georgia, Texas, and British Columbia, in late April 2022. We have received no complaints or reports of illness to pets or humans from this lot. No other Primal lot codes or products are impacted by this voluntary recall.
The safety and quality of our products has always been my top priority. We confirmed that all testing results on this lot were negative for Listeria monocytogenes – both raw materials and finished product – before it left our production facility in California. We have temperature tracking devices on all shipments to ensure storage requirements are met while being transported. Our Raw Frozen Primal Patties should be kept frozen until a pet parent is ready to use them. Pet parents are also encouraged to follow all safe handling instructions on our packaging.
This voluntary recall is a result of routine sampling by the FDA, which revealed one positive result for Listeria monocytogenes in one lot (#W10068709) of Raw Frozen Primal Patties for Dogs Beef Formula. If you have product from this lot in your possession, we ask that you stop feeding it to your dog and properly dispose of it.
If you have any questions, please view our recall FAQs or contact Primal Pet Foods by phone at (800) 742-1312 Monday–Friday, 6:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. PST, or by submitting an online request.
