Brushing your pet’s teeth may seem like the easiest and most common-sense solution to keeping your cat or dog’s teeth clean and plaque free; however, it often comes with some of the most difficulty and resistance from your pet. Check out these 4 other ways that will let you stay on top of your pet’s dental health.
1. A Healthy Diet
As humans, we know that a diet rich in processed foods and sugars can impact our own oral health negatively — and it is the same for our pets! A moist, low carbohydrate, and minimally processed diet will naturally limit plaque and tarter build up.
2. Toys
There are many toys made specifically to help keep your pet’s teeth healthy and help to prevent plaque build up. Durable rubber toys with smooth surfaces offer flexibility when chewed and typically are the best choice — they also tend to stay in one piece, so you won’t find toy-stuffing spread throughout your living room! As always, we recommend never leaving your dog unattended with a new toy.
3. Raw Bones
Primal’s Raw Meaty Bones are a great example of a bone that will keep your pet’s teeth healthy and clean. Our bones work to scrape away plaque and tartar without leaving behind a starch like many popular dental chew treats do. Dogs and cats do not have the enzyme in their saliva that breaks down starches, which means any starch-based food has to be followed by teeth brushing and rinsing.
4. Dental Tooth Wipes, Rinses, and Sprays
There are many safe and effective oral hygiene products available at your local independent pet store that will help to clear away plaque and inhibit harmful bacterial growth. Dental wipes, for example, are relatively less invasive to brushing and although they can’t get into all the nooks and crannies, they offer an alternative. Other products are as simple as enzymes added into your pet’s water dish!
